The course focuses on the principles of the Brazilian educator and thinker Paulo Freire applied to the XXI century education and classroom. The main objective is to discuss and reflect on Freire´s educational legacy, mainly his contemporary philosophy. For that, the activities proposed aim at promoting reflection and dialogue among the participants, mostly teachers, educators and teacher educators, from diverse areas of knowledge, cultural and educational contexts. The interactions will be synchronous and asynchronous, and will be based on some publications in which he revisited a few of his theoretical positionings. Participants will have the opportunity to better understand some of the main Freirean’s concepts, such as palavra-mundo, banking education and pedagogical praxis, and relate them to their educational contexts.

Please, access the course materials and do the activities in the Study Room (SRs) for each week of study.
The materials and tasks will be available a day or two in advance, so you have the whole following week to acess them.
The tasks will have a deadline, so please, pay attention to dates. Your certificate depends mainly on your assynchronous participation. Please, let us know if you have any problems along the course sending an email to freire.pedagogy.ufpr@gmail.com
In each SR you will also find extra materials (websites suggestions, videos, webinars and texts) on Freire's work.

Welcome to Study Room 2!
We invite you to watch this short video summarizing a few aspects of Paulo Freire´s life.

This week we are going to study some of Freire's perspectives on education and their relation to the world we live in. For that, we wil discuss some of his ideas from the book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, chapter 2, published for the first time in 1968 and how they are still present in today's socitety.
Let's start by waching a very short video in which talks about the palavra-mundo, explaining how, even before reading the world in words human beings are reading the world, in several different ways. If you cannot understand Portuguese, read the video trasncription below.
"Nobody starts reading the word because, before the word, it is the world and the description of ourselves that we have to read. And we read the world as we understand it and interpret it... and it has been that what men and women have done... only millennia after watching the world, human beings invented language, and only centuries, thosands of years later, they invented the written language"-

Welcome to Study Room 5! This week we are going to learn about Freire's perspectives on education and pedagogical praxis from the view of the teachers as reflective critical thinkers.
For that, we will study the concepts of critical consciousness and praxis and discuss how they apply to ourselves, as students and teachers, and to what we have been doing recently.
Also, based on Freire's concepts on teaching and teacher education, presented in his book Pedagogy of Freedom, we are going to reflect and discuss on the role of schools and universities and their teachers in the contemporary world, intensively afftected by the Covid-19 Pandemics. -
We have reached the end of our course on Freire's Pedagogy and hope that, along the readings and discussions proposed, you could have the chance of better understanding some Freirean concepts and relate them to your personal and professional life.
Also, we believe this may be the beginning of new relationships, new partnerships and new ideas of work, study and research.
We are available for any doubts you may have while posting the activities in our virtual classroom.
