In chapter 2 of the Pedagogy of the
Opressed, Freire brings the concept of “banking
education”–which tends to encourage dehumanization. Freire examines this kind
of education at schools but it is also present in homes, churches and other social
institutions. He talks about a problem-posing education which is liberatory, as
a way to escape “banking education”. Based on your educational and life
experience, on the reading of Chapter 2 and on two of the short videos by Joseph
E Reed – (
1. Write an example of banking education you have observed or experienced in your life. It may have occurred in schools or in other social institutions.
2. Write an example of dialogic or liberatory education you have observed or experienced in your life –either in school or in other social institutions.
