So, Paulo Freire's lines are all amazing and instructive. But one of the parts that I identified the most was when Freire said: “It’s necessary to make clear to the kids or the adults that their way of speaking is as beautiful as our way of speaking and second, they have the right to speak like this”. Because it is this teaching that I try to pass on every day to my immigrant and refugee students who come to Brazil in search of a new history and in search of acceptance.

I had the opportunity to observe some Portuguese classes for immigrant and refugee students in Minas Gerais last year and heard about other programs and NGOs in Manaus and Sao Paulo. When I was an undergraduate (2006-2009), we did not have classes that prepared professionals to work with students from diverse backgrounds. I know we have a long way to go to become a more accepting, equal and inclusive society.
I remember having conversations about this topic when I was undergraduate student and seeing some colleagues being resistant to the understanding of multiple worlds, and that those multiple worlds were all as valid. I have been away for nine years. Can you tell me how it is looking like now?

I hope Ana tells you her view on this, but I think we have a lot of resistance still. It all depends on the context, but I believe, in general, people are unaware of the pressing need for understanding multiple worlds. The political scenario also has not favoured this kind of openings either, but we must believe things will be different, right?
As for people in academia, university contexts, I feel we have made good progress. I graduated in 1994 and things were sooooo different back then, I am proud of the changes.

I agree with you there, very important and meaningful.
I also tell my English language learners, who study Letras, that they have their own accents and ways of speaking, which are legitimate and no one should tell them differently!
